How To Set Up Off Camera Flash Canon 6d

Using the Catechism EOS 6D in picture show mode

To exam the Catechism EOS 6D camera (B&H / Amazon), and the Canon 24-70mm f4.0L IS lens (affiliate), I met upward with Anastasia Z in New York. She had such presence and conviction, that while shooting stills of her earlier in the day, I had an idea of a video sequence nosotros could do. And with that, hither is an overview of how well the Canon 6D fares as a video camera.

So when the light levels starting falling this afternoon, we went to Times Foursquare, which is always insanely lit upwardly by the numerous billboards. An e'er-changing flood of light from every direction.

This 30 2d clip is an edit from about 12 clips I shot of her. We had to work fast since it was freezingly common cold, especially with the wind blowing. We'd work out a sequence while she had her warm jacket on, and then she'd hand it over to my friend, Peter Salo, who assisted united states of america. And then nosotros'd shoot a sequence quickly, earlier she popped the thicker jacket on once again, and tried to warm up a trivial scrap once again.

Fifty-fifty with having to shoot fast, and but being able to shoot express sequences, I am very happy with the results. It definitely shows how energetic and sensational our model,Anastasia Z, is. (If you're a New York photographer, check her out on Model Commotion.)

More than techie info about the video clip, and about the Canon 6D …

Technical info about the video prune

To keep to the 180 degree dominion about the human relationship between FPS and shutter speed, I shot the sequences at 1/50 @ f/vi.3 @ 2000 ISO

I pulled the exposure down ever and so slightly (via iMovie) in ii of the sequences shown hither. The low-cal levels in Times Square vary then much that yous can't truly blast the exposure every time.

I don't really get along with my Glidecam, and it's a constant mission to adjust information technology. Therefore, quite often, I get with an easier way of getting steady shots while moving – I have the photographic camera on a Manfrotto Fluid-Caput Video Monopod (affiliate), and then lightly residual the stem of the monopod (but below the head) between the tips of my thumb and two fingers. So the monopod dangles gently from my fingertips. Inertia will go on it fairly steady, even with me moving. It'south a quick piece of work-around that very oftentimes gives results comparable to the Glidecam.

I edited this prune in iMovie, with the soundtrack from Triple Scoop Music.

Neither the  Canon EOS 6D (affiliate) and Canon 5D mark Three (chapter) offer continuous AF while shooting video, but that's pretty much standard. Not having continuous AF while shooting video, isn't really a negative – you would most certainly want to control your focus while shooting video. It is quite distracting to watch video and run into the focus pop in and out during a static sequence.

For this clip then, I wanted a fair corporeality of depth-of-field, and with the wide angles used, f6.three worked fine. The movement masked whatsoever focus errors for the most office. At the showtime of the prune, by the time you lot realize that Anastasia is the bailiwick of the short clip, she is already  in focus.

I prefocused on a altitude where our fingertips could touch. We worked with the idea that that is the distance we're going to shoot at for the most part. With Anastasia standing still at that distance, I'd zoom in on her eyes using LiveView. One time I had the camera focused, we'd move. Information technology all worked out pretty well for an impromptu video clip, I think!

Canon 6D movie mode / video capabilities

  • User interface / camera controls

The external controls betwixt the Catechism 5D mark III (chapter) and the  Canon EOS 6D (chapter) are very similar. The stills / movie selector switch are in the same position. However, some are different – the Play push button and Zoom button are in a dissimilar position on the Canon 6D. The 6D too lacks the joystick … which is now incorporated into the thumbwheel on the dorsum. It took a little getting used to, since information technology is different that every other Catechism DSLR that I've used.

This would mean that someone that switches betwixt the two cameras, will have to get used to the dissimilar ergonomics.

  • Shooting video

Shooting video with the Canon 6D is simplicity itself.

Prepare the LiveView / Movie switch to the flick position, and hit the Beginning  / Stop push button.

Focus before the time, using the enlarge office in LiveView mode. Go on the camera / lens in manual focus.

And of grade, y'all have to decide on your motion picture settings before-hand, such equally whether y'all want xxx fps or 24fps, then on.

  • Specifications

The Catechism 6D and Canon 5D marker Three offer the aforementioned specs for video recording.

You have two video encoding choices:
All-I (low compression)
IPB (loftier compression)

The video files are processed differently in-photographic camera, with the loftier-compression manner giving you more recording fourth dimension. The low compression mode (All-I) will requite you college quality video, which makes information technology a meliorate format to edit with.

Just like the 5D Mark 3, the Canon 6D offers full manual control over the video while recording.

The born microphone (which I didn't use here) is mono, simply there is an external socket for a stereo microphone.

The big differences between the 6D and 5D marking III – the 6D doesn't have a headphone jack to monitor the audio being recorded. This is a huge drawback if y'all want to employ the camera specifically every bit a video camera.

Please note:  testing the video quality for artifacting and moirĂ© is outside the scope of this review. And then you lot would want to do more research hither.

Summary

The Canon 6D is a surprisingly sturdy little camera, and feels good in your hands. It is supremely piece of cake to use. The only drawback that I could see for more serious apply every bit a video camera, is the lack of headphone jack. Other than that, I'd very happily use this photographic camera to shoot video.
